Flash Fiction FIGHT  26th April 2021   Podcast Version >>

Thank you for supporting my writing by reading my blogs.

This week I thought I’d share a flash fiction and explain my journey into this mode of writing.

In 2019 I found a wonderful group of supportive writers and a writing habit.

I’d met some of them before on a site called ‘WriteOn,’ a wonderful writing community which was sadly not profitable enough for amazon to continue. Many of the group moved to Wattpad and the ‘weekendwritein’ group was formed.

Each week Paul chooses a prompt word, and the aim is to write a story in no more than 500 words.

A flash fiction.

I joined in and for almost two years I wrote a new story every weekend. I challenged myself to write exactly 500 words, in different genres, and with a twist. I have compiled two books from these stories- https://www.jenniclarke.com/my-books The first volume is free in eBook format.

I am now concentrating on my novels and memoir, but pop over to the group and join in occasionally.

The participants are fantastic and supportive and some of them now have a podcast where ‘weekendwritein’ authors can be interviewed and/or read one of their stories. It’s a lovely way to share your writing with the world and be part of a virtual writing group.

I recommend flash fiction as it develops concise writing, thought over word choice, character arc, story arc, and a writing habit. As an extra bonus, there are many opportunities for competitions and paid publication for flash fiction.

Today I am sharing one of the stories that hasn’t yet made it into a book.

The prompt was ‘Fight’ - what happens when there is a fight?

Jax kicked a stone into the road and stuck his fingers up at the car driver who glared at him.

‘You reckon the others are comin?’Jax kicked another stone, this time at Anders.

‘Course they are.’ Anders stopped the stone with his foot and flicked it back. ‘Ain’t gonna miss a chance to fight.’

‘Frigging surprising though.’ Jax said as the stone clattered behind him. ‘Who’d think Miss Hallister would be into fighting?’

‘Yeah well. I don’t reckon she meant us to see them flyers. She was ‘anding them out to the girls. Giving them tips on self defence against us brutes as likely.’ Anders jerked his chin up as a car horn blared. ‘She can’t turn us away, not after all that equality shite she rams down our throats.’

‘Where are you, Blaine?’ Jax shouted at his phone. Another car horn blared as Blaine, Mason, and Harlen swerved their bikes through the traffic and onto the pavement skidding to a halt before Jax and Anders.

‘We’re here and ready to fight.’ Blaine shouted and fist bumped Jax. ‘Had to wait for pretty girl.’ He jerked his thumb towards a red-faced Mason.

‘What’s with the tiny pink bike Mason?’ Anders asked. ‘Love the shiny tassels. And is that a fairy sticker?’

‘My bloody bike’s got a puncture.’ Mason grumbled. ‘Nicked me sister’s.’ He laughed. ‘Big trouble later so I hope this ‘ere fight club learns me something.’

‘He’s lying.’ Harlen punched Ander’s fist. ‘He really wants a unicorn.’ He spun his bike to avoid a thump from Mason. ‘We going then or what?’

‘Yeah.’ Jax said. ‘It’s in the community hall behind the library.’

Blaine grimaced. ‘My Mum goes to yoga there, you sure it’s the right place?’

‘It’s a hall dude.’ Ander’s shrugged.

Blaine circled Ander’s as they crossed the grass to the library, until Anders kicked his back wheel and Blaine fell.

‘Hope we’re partnered, Anders. I owe you a fist.’ Blaine said and laughed.

They blustered around the back of the building to the community centre.

‘Hello boys.’ Miss Hallister greeted them. ‘What brings you here?’

Jax held out the scrunched flyer. ‘Fight club, we wanna join.’

Miss Hallister smiled. ‘Really? Are you sure?’

‘Yeah. That a problem?’ Mason swaggered up, dumping his bike by the door.

‘No problem, Mason. There’s a stand for your bikes.’ She pointed to a metal frame. ‘Have you brought sports kit to change into? And the five-pound introductory fee?’

Harlen patted his backpack and the others nodded.

Miss Hallister opened the entrance door and accepted their crumpled money. ‘Well then, come in, get changed and join us in the hall when you’re ready.’

They hustled into the men’s changing rooms.

‘Did you see her face? Thought she was gonna faint.’ Anders said.

‘See the smirk when she spied Mason’s bike?’

‘Shut up Blaine. You ready?’

They swaggered into the hall and froze.

‘That’s your mum,’ Blaine hissed in Jax’s ear. ‘What’s she doing at a fight class?’

Jax gulped.

‘Welcome, boys, to the first session of ‘Full Intense Gyrating Hip Therapy,’ Miss Hollister said with a grin.

And that’s it, a flash fiction story with a twist.
